Maui – Dubstep Paradise

FINALLY had the time to sit and complete my footage from Maui last year. The visit was part escape from the Vancouver rain, and part shoot (which is how all of my travel is these days). For montage style shorts, I find the hard part is choosing the music. When I found the Coldplay Paradise remix, I knew I had my track.

This shoot was actually my first attempt with an intervalometer, too capture timelapses. I was pleasantly surprised with the results. Though it took my a few attempts to get the frame rate correct for 24fps. The secret: import your stills at .01 seconds to Final Cut, then export as a 24fps clip.

One of my all-time favourite shots is the sunrise on Haleakala volcano. That is actually my SECOND try, as the first night, my wife and I booked a sunrise visit then a mountain bike down the mountain. Somehow, in our stumbling out the door at 3am, I managed to forget my camera. Rather than relinquish the shot, I drove up the next morning by myself (a 4 hour roundtrip) which was an ordeal in itself. (I got lost a few times, almost ran out of gas, and off the road).

This trip I also hung out with the crew from Occupy Maui, and managed to capture their “Evict Monsanto” actions. Here’s folk musician Human and band playing their track:

And finally, just prior to Maui, I visited my Taoist teacher Casey Kochmer and produced this short introduction:
